Economics Instruction at Maricopa Christian Academy

I was looking for an excuse to show off our new school logo. Maybe the subject of economics is not the ideal time, but there it is.

Economics is the final subject taught and mastered in our Senior Academy (high school) history instruction. It is a one-semester class. The textbooks used are Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell and The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey.

I was researching textbooks for our economics course and was unenthusiastically leaning toward the curriculum published by BJU Press. One that I had used at my two previous schools. While it is very organized and put together well, It was boring. Plus, I don't think it relates well to everyday life.

I then purchased some books by Christians and one secularist on money management. Nice books, but again not inspiring.

I listen to Thomas Sowell, Dave Ramsey and others when I exercise. Economic Facts and Fallacies and Discrimination and Disparities are two books by Sowell inhabiting my bookshelf. Mr. Sowell is a conservative scholar in residence at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. At 94 years of age, he continues to write and update books and speaks nationally on economics.

Dave Ramsey is nationally known for his radio show, The Dave Ramsey Show and his books about regaining control of your finances.

So these two gentlemen have written classic time-honored books. Sowell's book, Basic Economics, was published in 2015 while The Total Money Makeover is 2003.

These two books along with the book, Prosperity? Seeking the True Gospel, form the basis of of our economics course.

Basic Economics is a great book for beginning economics. Here is the description provided by the book jacket. "... a presentation of economics in plain, straightforward language, without the jargon, graphs, or equations that dominate too much of most other economic writings. This book is aimed at people with no previous study of the subject, namely the general public. Basic Economics illustrates economic principles with vivid examples from countries around the world, to make those principles memorable in a way that technical jargon or mathematical presentations may not."

The Total Money Makeover is one method of managing personal finances. It is not the only way, but it has weathered the test of time. Here is another quote from a book jacket.

"With The Total Money Makeover , you'll be able to:

-Design a surefireplan for paying off all debt-cars, houses, everything.

-Recognize the 10 mostdangerous money myths

-Secure a big fat nest egg for emergencies and retirement"

There is also a great, easy to use workbook to practice the principle's taught in the book.

Finally, we use the short readings by authors such as Wayne Grudem, John Piper and several pastors from Africa on the false gospel, the prosperity gospel, sweeping across continents.
