Last year, our elementary science curriculum for grades 4–6 used Science in the Beginning by Dr. Jay L. Wile. We selected this curriculum because we want science to reflect a Christian worldview—that God created the universe with order, purpose, and design.

The textbook is organized around the seven days of Creation, exploring topics such as light, water, plants, the sun, and living creatures. Along with its strong biblical foundation, the curriculum includes many hands-on experiments that help students understand God’s orderly creation.

This year, our sixth-grade students will emphasize another fascinating aspect of God’s creation by studying simple machines. The four simple machines they will learn are gears, wheels, levers, and pulleys.

In two previous schools, we used LEGO® simple machine kits as part of our science instruction. While the first two kits were effective, we found the LEGO® Education Early Simple Machines Set 9689 to be the most engaging and educational.

Working in teams of two, students begin by learning the fundamentals of each simple machine while building basic models. They then complete a series of activities in which they build, test, and evaluate models using the simple machine being studied. Finally, each team is presented with a problem that must be solved by designing and constructing a model using the concepts they have learned.

Throughout every stage of the learning process, each student must demonstrate individual understanding through written work, verbal explanations, and the successful completion of the assigned models.

LEGO® Simple Machines provides an enjoyable, hands-on way for students to discover some of the fundamental principles God built into His creation. By combining observation, experimentation, problem-solving, and teamwork, students develop a deeper appreciation for both science and the wisdom of the Creator.
